The Bike Collection
Sam was not actually a cyclist as an adult but he cycled as a kid and he was exposed to bicycles when he trained in the circus as a teenager and the love stuck. He was more of a petrol head as an adult and restoring and rallying two vintage cars, a 1928 Model A Ford and a 1936 Bentley. Bicycles cropped up in various places both in his own personal work and in commercial projects.
This selection of prints was put together at my initiative as a tribute to Sam’s love for graphic elements which - amongst many other genres and themes - characterised his career. In these shots a bike is never just a bike, it’s also supporting a narrative, playful, thoughtful, graphic, humorous, sexy, symbolic and satirical. In Sam’s world, a bike could tell many stories. This is a selection of the very best bike prints in the archive some of which are being offered here for the first time.
