Marcel Marceau did visit Johannesburg in 1962 but by then Sam was already well aware of his work through printed media and movie shorts. It was a pre-TV era in South Africa. Sam may well have seen him in the theatre either in London or Paris, when he was studying in London from 1949 to 1950.

CONDITION: Very Good condition with light surface scuffing commensurate with age and handling. Barely visible surface crease on right edge of hat. Single weight silver gelation print, glossy finish, retouched by Sam. Signed verso in pencil. Vintage print 1961. From the Five Girls (1962) project and in the book.
