Kate Hat Deep Shadow
From the main story of ‘Cowboy Kate & Other Stories’ 1964. The legendary prop, Kate’s hat, was a suede hat that belonged to the model. She brought it to a shoot on her own initiative and that seeded the idea of a Western story which was conceived and developed by Sam and his wife Alida. Desmond Skirrow, the London based advertising executive and spy novel writer, later put it into words. The story is really brief, sexy girl gets into trouble through no fault of her own, gets herself out of trouble by escaping from jail and apprehending the real killer thereby restoring balance to her world….but around that fun little story a lot of photographic magic happened. It was the serious fun that both captured and helped to define the zeitgeist of the sixties.
