November Girl with Horse in Stable - Vintage - Signed - One of only two copies
I thought the Estate had sold it’s only signed copy of this print but a search of few boxes of prints that had been put aside revealed this hugely popular image from November Girl and one other signed print, Gill & Curl from Five Girls. Still, one of just two signed prints only serves to underline the very low print to image ratio throughout the entire archive. Other master photographers who were contemporaries of Sam had print runs that went into the hundreds whereas Sam’s archive typically has low single digit lifetime prints with very occasional runs of 12 to 20 prints.
November Girl 1967 was the last book in the 60’s figure book trilogy. It is really the classical music concerto to Kate’s timeless pop music. Rather than the light heartted whimsical story of Cowboy Kate, the girl who unfairly gets into trouble and then rescues herself, November Girl takes a photographically beautiful but emotionallly serious look at loss, love, longing, loneliness and the spiritual imperative to keep living. Many passionate photo collectors have said to the estate - without prompting - that November Girl, despite ‘Kate’s’ popularity, is the superior book. When November Girl came out Foyle’s in London dedicated an entire window to the book. November Girl is a timeless definitive book that stylistically played a key role in both defininng the era and lamenting the broken dreams of the sixties.
This image also appeared in the large scale book titled ‘HORSE’ by Kelly Klein, published by Rizzoli in 2008. There’s only one copy currently listed on AbeBooks for USD$620.00.
RARITY: One of two prints of this image. Both are signed. This second copy was found recently hidden in the archive. The other copy is sold. Size: 14.8” x 7.85” [37.25cm x 19.95cm] The image of the book cover and spread are purely for interest and reference.
CONDITION: Very good to excellent condition. Single weight silver gelatin print with gloss finish. No corner creases but this print was obviously used for reproduction and some of the pencil lines verso are faintly visible recto. Retouched by Sam (as with all signed silver gelatin lifetime prints). Signed verso in pencil and dated 1967, the year that November Girl was published.
Silver Gelatin prints (both vintage and later) acquired directly from the estate are accompanied by a free estate print of the same image. These are identical to our standard size estate prints. To the best of our knowledge we are the only photographic estate in the world offering this generous flexible feature of purchasing a vintage work by Sam. These estate prints are produced to museum standards and appear on the secondary market with values up to USD $3,000. This second print has proved to be very popular, it provides flexibility of ownership and makes for a wonderful gift.

“Seldom if ever has a female nude been treated with such photographic sensitivity. A beautiful large-format book by a master in his field.
