Cowboy Kate - Grainy Full Figure - *Signed* Vintage
This is one of those gems from the archive that has never been exhibited or offered for sale before now. One of only two known prints of a stunning image and it’s signed which is very rare. At Sam’s passing only 1 in 40 of his collectable prints were signed and very few are left.
Although Sam inscribed the print (verso in pencil) as ‘Cowboy Kate’ there is little doubt in my mind that this print is from a shoot for the preceding book ‘Five Girls’ 1962. One of the ‘Five’ was Shirley who then went on to feature as the main character in Cowboy Kate published in 1964. See the ‘Five Girls’ book reference images on this page.
RARITY: Only signed copy, there is one other print of this image in the archive in a slightly larger size, also a vintage print, which is unsigned.
CONDITION: Very good condition. Single weight silver gelatin print with glossy finish. Retouched by Sam. Small corner creases in all corners easily hidden by passepartout. Vintage print c1964. Signed verso in Pencil. 11.3” x 8.8” (28.7cm x 22.40cm)
Silver Gelatin prints (both vintage and later) acquired directly from the estate are accompanied by a free estate print of the same image. These are identical to our standard size estate prints. To the best of our knowledge we are the only photographic estate in the world offering this generous flexible feature of owning a vintage work by Sam. These estate prints are produced to museum standards and appear on the secondary market with values up to USD $3,000. This second print has proved to be very popular, it provides flexibility of ownership and makes for a wonderful gift.
